Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer averted immediate elimination from ATP finals defeating Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets on Tuesday. The six time champion lost his opening match against Kei Nishikori, at London’s O2 Arena.
Federer failed to qualify only once for the knockout rounds in his 15 previous appearances and that too was 10 years ago in the Shanghai Finals.
However, the world number 3 must beat South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in his last group match to claim his record seventh ATP finals title and this would be his 100th singles title of his illustrious career.
