It boiled down to a contest of goalkeepers as Croatia and Denmark played the full 120 minutes of regulation, and extra-time but could not be separated.
The first four minutes descended to chaos as both the teams got one goal each! Denmark striker Jorgensen scored in the very first minute of the match. Subasic tried to save but could only divert the ball into his own net. The Danish lead was cancelled in the third minute when Dalsgaard attempted to clear a low cross which hit Andreas Christensen in the face and Mario Mandzukic scored from the rebound. The premise was set for a high scoring match but to the disappointment of many, that was about as good as it got for the viewers.
The game inevitably rolled into extra time and shortly before the end of extra time, on the 116th minute, Modric sent Andre Rebic clear on goal. Rebic rounded Schmeichel but just before dispatching the killing stroke into an open goal, Jorgensen fouled him from behind. It resulted in a late penalty and the Croats almost breathed a sigh of huge relief. However, relief was still a few minutes away. Modric took the penalty but Schmeichel dived to his left and saved the penalty! Jorgensen was shown a yellow card for his tackle while Denmark and Croatia went into the penalty shoot out to decide the winner.
Schmeichel saved a couple of penalties in the shootout but Subasic saved one more and Ivan Rakitic sent the brilliant Danish goalkeeper the wrong way while he scored past him and in the process, also helped his team into the next round past Denmark.
