The tournament organizers declared on Wednesday that Swiss champion Roger Federer is going to commence his 2014 season at Australia's Brisbane International for the first time in a bid to improve his Grand Slam hopes.
Federer, who is a 17-time major winner, has descended to World no. 5 in the rankings for the first time in a decade during a frustrating season and asserted that he would kick off 2014 at Brisbane in advance of the Australian Open.
The tennis star revealed that he has always hoped that he could come to Brisbane, so he is happy and they are all able to make it work. He confirmed that he is not just coming there for the Australian Open, especially when he commits so early ahead, it is also to win in Brisbane.
On the other side, Andy Murray is the defending champion. The 31-year-old Federer is the first player to be proclaimed for the hardcourt tournament commencing from 29th December-5th January and director Cameron Pearson commented that it was a coup.
Pearson opined that Roger Federer is a global superstar as well as arguably the most accomplished tennis player in history. In fact, his participation at this event is going to be a legacy for future generations.
Truly, Federer is hoping to overturn his 2013 fortunes at this week's claycourt Swiss Open following suffering a defeat from World no. 114, Argentine Federico Delbonis during the semi-finals in Hamburg, nearly a month after bowing out of Wimbledon in the 2nd round.
