After months of speculation, ‘The Best’ award ceremony took place last night in London, England. Ronaldo had already announced that he would not travel to London to attend the award ceremony. Messi, however, announced at the very last moment that he would not make it owing to a family emergency. A lot of footballing superstars and legends turned up at the ceremony for one of the most prestigious awards in the world of football. From Ronaldo Nazario to Ronaldinho, from Maldini to Didier Drogba, it was a star-studded night as the legends turned up for ‘The Best’.
Thibaut Courtois won The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award for his brilliant performance between the sticks for Belgium at the recently concluded World Cup. Didier Deschamps won The Best FIFA Manager award after leading his national side to World Cup glory in Russia. Brazilian legend, Marta da Silva, won The Best FIFA Women’s Player award. Reynald Pedros won The Best FIFA Women’s Coach award. The one category that raised a lot of eyebrows is probably the Puskas award given to the scorer of the best goal of the season. Mo Salah won the award for a goal that was rather ordinary in comparison to the other nominees on the list.
It was finally time for the most prestigious and significant award of the night, The Best FIFA Men’s Player. Croatian midfielder and Real Madrid star, Luka Modric, took it home and deservingly so. After helping Madrid to a third consecutive UCL victory, and carrying his national side to the finals of the World Cup and receiving the Golden Ball (given to the best player of the World Cup) it was almost inevitable.
FIFA also announced the FIFPro World XI. There were quite a few surprises, to say the least. Here’s a look at the players who made it to the team of the year:
David De Gea (GK)
Dani Alves (RB)
Varane (CB)
Sergio Ramos (CB)
Marcelo (LB)
