After nearly four decades moving onto synthetic turfs, International hockey is eyeing for a grass surface return. This is on account to make the sport more realistic and viable. FIH is very keen on this idea. The governing body is planning to relax the mandatory rule of playing the game on artificial surface.
This change might come into effect gradually. They are likely to implement this idea starting with 2021 Hockey Series Open, followed by 2024 Olympic qualifiers. Although not official, this idea is likely to circulate during the FIH Congress, due to be held in Delhi on Saturday. However, for the time being, all highest level international matches are going to be played on synthetic grass.
