India thrashed Italy 3-0 to book their place in the quarter finals of the Hockey Women’s World Cup, London 2018. They will face the Irish in their next match. Ireland, the ‘giant-slayers’, are ranked 14 worldwide and have already defeated tenth-seeded India (1-0) in the group stagesof the competition. India will be looking for revenge as this was not a solitary incident. They went down to the Irish 2-1 in Johannesburg last year.
India has made it to the top 8 of the tournament for the first time in 40 years and will be looking to book their place in the semis after 44 years of wait. It will only be the second time that the Indian Women’s Hockey Team will qualify for the last four.
The Indian team led by Rani Rampal played their best match so far in this tournament as they breezed past Italy. Lalremsiamigave India the lead, scoring from open play. India converted twice (45’, 55’) from penalty corners within a span of 10 minutes to seal the game 3-0.
