It has come to light that Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom, who was currently blessed with a third child, is actively repairing a road named after her in Imphal. In fact, the state government's inaction to fix the 3 km Langol Games Village Road has prompted Mary Kom's family & local residents to collect funds and fill the dangerous pot holes.
Mary's husband Onler Kom informed on Thursday that apart from repairing the roads, the locals have collected Rs 20,000 till date to purchase four truckloads of gravel. Onler disclosed that Mary will herself donate a bigger amount for the road repair campaign. He added that the donation campaign is continuing. They desire to improve the roads by filling up the potholes so that the difficulties encountered by the locals while commuting reduce a bit.
Five-time world boxing champion Mary Kom claimed that she had already appealed chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh but there was no response. She will again put pressure on the chief minister shortly to develop the roads of the locality.
Interestingly, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, who is playing Mary Kom in the forthcoming film on the boxer's life and times, visited the region on 15th July. Mary rued about the impression such roads create in the minds of the tourists.
The reputed boxer runs the MC Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation at her Langol residence.
