In a repeat of the Rio Olympics final, PV Sindhu and Spanish shuttler Carolina Marin faced off in the finals of the BWF World Championship. Unfortunately for us Indian fans, the result was not so different this time around as Marin created a new world record defeating Sindhu in straight sets (19-21, 10-21). The Spaniard became the first women to win three world titles.
In the first set, Sindhu was leading 15-11 only to make a couple of mistakes, helping Carolina to a 5-point recovery. From there on, the Spaniard had taken control of the game as she never really allowed Sindhu to comeback into it.
KentoMomota of Japan defeated China’s Shi Yuqi (21-11, 21-13) to win the men’s singles title at the BWF World Championship. He is now the only Japanese man to have achieved this feat. He was a firm favourite to win in Rio in 2016 before being suspended by his own federation owing to his involvement in a gambling scandal.
