It has been reported that Rafael Nadal has been confirmed as the new world number one in the latest ATP tennis rankings, which was published on Monday. He has pushed Novak Djokovic to second spot and Roger Federer to the seventh.
Precisely, Nadal has scored 11,160 points, which is just 40 ahead of Djokovic. In fact, Djokovic has lost his hold on the top spot despite smashing the Mallorcan to win the China Open on Sunday.
Andy Murray of Britain, who is currently recovering from back surgery, clinched the third spot in the revised rankings but Swiss great Federer plunged one place from sixth to seventh.
Moreover, David Ferrer of Spain continued to stay at number four, which is just 185 points off Murray's position. On the other side, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina climbed up two places to fifth position after winning the Japan Open.
The 27-year-old Nadal has won 10 titles, including the French Open as well as US Open after returning in February following suffering from seven months of left knee injury. Before defeat to Djokovic on Sunday, he had been unbeaten since Wimbledon, where he lost in the first-round to Steve Darcis of Belgium. Previously, Nadal had two stints at the summit of men's tennis. First he became number one in August 2008 and managed to stay there for 46 weeks, reclaiming apex spot in June 2010 and adding 56 weeks more to his tally.
