The mega football tournament is just around the corner, and this year foresees old records broken and some new records being made. Here’s a small account of what we might be looking at this year.
- WE WON, THANKS TO PENALTY.
Both Argentina and Germany are at neck-to-neck record of winning through penalty shootouts, and have never lost a match that was decided through penalty shootouts. One win for either of them would break the record.
- AGE IS JUST A NUMBER
Egyptian captain, Essam El-Hadary is set to break three records together this World Cup. Aged 45, he is the oldest player to debut, the oldest captain and of course the oldest player who is going to play in the World Cup.
- LOOK WHO IS THE CAPTAIN
If things go right, Rafael Marquez is ready to break his own record of leading the team maximum number of times. Till now, he has stood as the concrete captain for Mexico spanning four successive tournaments. He was recently booked under a drug trafficking case, but is on the team list. Provided there is no twist in the tale, he will successively guide Mexico through 5 tournaments.
- OLD FRIEND (FRIEND?)
Some teams are destined to meet each other at some point in the tournament. Sweden is surely tired of Brazil by now, having faced the other 7 times. Same goes for Argentina and Germany, who have faced each other 7 times. This year too, they have been placed in 4 different groups and have a major possibility of meeting each other, again.
