Tonight was Luis Suarez’s 100th appearance for Uruguay and he scored the only goal of the game to send Uruguay through to the knockout stages with six points from two wins in two games while dumping Saudi Arabia and Egypt out of the tournament.
Although Suarez seems to be far from his best in this World Cup, he capitalized on the mistake from Saudi Arabian goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais as he jumped up to palm the ball away from a corner and missed completely. Suarez was unmarked and the loose ball fell to his feet for him to finish with his left foot on the 23rd-minute mark. Edinson Cavani also came close to scoring in two instances but failed.Soon afterwards, Saudi Arabia rallied to create numerous chances, the best ones being from Hatan Bahbri. However, a goal was not to be and ultimately Uruguay hung onto their slender lead to progress into the next round of the tournament. However, going forward, Uruguay will need to raise their standard, as other teams will not be as forgiving as Saudi Arabia or Egypt!
