Swiss Indoors: Roger Federer sneaked past Adrian Mannarino in the first round

It is well known that Roger Federer has plunged to the sixth in the ATP rankings. However, he won by 6-4, 6-2 against Adrian Mannarino in the first round of Swiss Indoors at his home town of Basel on Monday.
No doubt, the five-time Basel champion has to put up mammoth efforts this week apart from the forthcoming Paris Masters if he desires to secure one of the four spots remaining in the 8-man field at the World Tour Finals at London in November.
Notably Federer, who is seeded third behind Juan Martin del Potro as well as Czech Tomas Berdych, is struggling for the spot in the finals with compatriot plus US Open finalist Stanislas Wawrinka. In fact, Wawrinka holds the provisional seventh position in the points race with his renowned compatriot by a mere five points adrift on eighth.
Federer, who improved his splendid record in Basel to 48-8, opined that he played well enough for a first round. He is completely confident regarding his plan. In fact, he wants to make something happen, he only need for his back, which disturbed him in the summer, which should not let him down. He expressed that it is great to be back in Basel, as he gets so much energy from this crowd. Right now, he is concentrating on playing well and wishes to qualify for London.
Subsequently, the Swiss superstar will either lock horns with Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan or Horacio Zeballos of Argentina in the second round.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old accorded a warm reception when he entered the court. He lost his service once prior to taking the first set against his French opponent, who is ranked 62 in the world.

Moreover, the 17-time Grand Slam winner climbed up a gear in the second set, broke twice, converted four breaks of serve from 13 chances to finish the match in 1 hour 11 minutes.
Meanwhile, Federer recognized that he has made serious errors in his planning on Sunday, which has led him to a disastrous 2013 and resulted in a split from his long time coach Paul Anacone last week.
After winning just one ATP title this year in Halle, he is in a jeopardy of missing out the World tour Finals, which he has won six times. He has insisted that in spite of his fall from grace, he is not taking retirement.
