To the delight of everyone, India's Somdev Devvarman is not far from sealing a berth in the US Open main draw following he overpowered Robby Ginepri in the 2nd round of the qualifiers on Thursday.
The sixth seeded scored a well struggled 7-6 2-6 6-2 victory over Ginepri of America in the qualifying tournament.
Somdev, who is ranked 113th in the world, will now lock horns with James Ward of Great Britain in the final round, in a bid to grab a spot in the men's singles title.
In fact, Somdev knocked 8 aces as compared to Ginepri's 5 in a chaotic 2-hour 9-minute battle against the 2005 US Open semi-finalist on Thursday. Of course, Ginepri ruled the match with a massive 42 winners as compared to Somdev's 27, but the 252-ranked local player's 44 unforced errors advanced against him.
Notably, Somdev has played the US Open four times and his best performance in the year's final Grand Slam was when he arrived at the 2nd round in the men's singles title in 2009.
