The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) announced itself in the World Cup for the first time as it was used to award penalties to both Australia and France in today’s match. Antoine Griezmann was awarded a penalty after he was fouled during the second half while a second penalty was awarded to Australia after Umtiti handled the ball when an Australian cross flew into the area. Mile Jedinak who used to play for Crystal Palace in the English Premier League converted this penalty for Australia.
With ten minutes to go, Giroud played through Paul Pogba and he managed to deflect the ball over Australian defender Matt Ryan over the head of the Australian keeper into the back of the net.
