Reportedly, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza claimed her third title of the season and 17th overall as she won the women's doubles trophy along with new partner Jie Zheng at the WTA New Haven Open.
While playing their fourth event together, third seeds Sania and Jie squashed the second-seeded combo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Katarina Srebotnik by 6-3, 6-4 in the summit clash.
Apparently, Mirza and Zheng fell behind to an early break, but from 3-3 onwards in the first set, they won six of the next seven games to dominate the first set and manage the second.
Of course, they encountered trouble while closing it out, as during 5-2 in the second set, Medina and Srebotnik won two games at a stretch. But the Indo-Chinese combo finished off the success on their fifth match point.
Mirza admitted that they didn't commence the tournament too well, winning a couple of what one might call as ugly matches. But they continued getting better with each match. It was great to play their best match in the final. She revealed that it was tough with this format. It was relentless. In fact, there was really no margin of error with the deuce points, the super tie-break. Sometimes it is only a toss-up. She highlighted that even today's match was 6-3, 6-4, however it was much rigid with the deuce points. They won three deuce games in the last set.
It is beyond doubt that Sania is the only Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title. She had won two titles this season prior this triumph. Actually, both the previous titles emerged with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
